Wonderful places you can visit near Milan
The Milanese love going on day trips outside the gates of the city as they say and there are lots of wonderful places nearby. Here is the Insider Guide to the greatest places
Como
50 km north of Milan is Como by the beautiful Lake Como surrounded by mountains.It takes about 1 hour from Cadorna station to Como lake and a return ticket is a little under €10. It’s a cosy and very beautiful small town with antique town walls and a great shopping area in the historical center and actually also the place where our personal love affair with Italy began many years ago.
Como is famous for its silk and we recommend you visit the outlet Diffusione Seta located at 8-11, Piazza Cavour (find on map).
When we were there last we had lunch at the super neat
Ristorante Sociale, 6, Via Rodari (find on map) – prices are reasonable and and the food is local and solid.
Another fantastic thing to do here is to take the ferry from Como (just by Piazza Cavour) for e.g.Bellaggio or out to see the incredibly beautiful villas, located in the area.
You can go from Como with the funicular up to Brunate where on a clear day you get an amazing view of Lake Como and the Alps.
During the summer the great outdoor swimming pool Villa Olmo, 20 minutes walk from the train station, is open every day from 9 am-7.30 pm, tickets are €8.50 for the whole day and €5.50 for the afternoon for adults and €4.50 (full day) €3.50 (afternoon) for children. You have to book online and sadly the page is only in Italian (!) but follow the “prenota” button and insert the date you want to go here and then click prosegui (continue). You can also rent sun beds (lettini) and beach umbrellas (ombrelloni).
There are several antique markets in Como:
On the first Sunday every month 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Piazza San Fedele (find on map)
On the second Wednesday every month (Except January and August) 8.30 a.m.-7 p.m. in Porto Torre, Viale Carlo Cattaneo (find on map)
On the last Saturday every month (except January and August) in Via Muratto og Piazza Ferretta (find on map)
On the third Sunday every month. 8 a.m.-7 p.m. (except January and August) in Via Spallino (find on map)
Bergamo
Then there is Bergamo, situated about 1 hour away by train from Milan. You can go from the stations of Stazione Centrale and Garibaldi
Bergamo is one of the few towns in Italy whose historical center is still located within the original town walls which have maintained their original aspect.
Bergamo is divided into two parts Bergamo Bassa (low Begamo) and Berrgamo Alta (high Begamo), Bergamo Alta is the historical part of the town which you can get to either by the city funicular or by taking the 45-minute hike up.
There are monasteries, historical buildings and an ancient botanical garden.
The wonderful Accademia Carrara museum is located in Bergamo Bassa.

Villagio Operaio Crespi d’Adda.
A villlage built by the Crespi family for the workers on their factory. It was very advanced for its time (late 1800s) with free education for the children of the employees, a free indoor swimming pool and the first village in Italy to have modern public lighting. In 1995 the village was entered nto the UNESCO World Heritage List. The directions on how to get there can be found here.
Isole Borromee and Stresa
The Isole Borromee (the Borromean Islands) are located in the Maggiore Lake and can be reached from Stresa by boat, they are lovely at all times of the year but are paricularly stunning during springtime, They are famous for their amazing palaces and gardens. There are three islands: Isola Bella with the Borromean Palace and gardens, Isola Superiore (Fishmerman’s Island) a tiny island with a beautiful fishing village and Isola Madre with a botanical garden and Palace – note that there is an additional admission’s fee (€10-14 per person) to see the sights.
Stresa is quite close to Milan and can be reached from both the Central Station and the Garibaldi station, the trip takes about 90 minutes.
Stresa has a lot of great restaurants where you can have lunch, some examples:

San Pellegrino Spa
If you feel like pampering yourself go for a day to the San Pellegrino spa (terme) (find on map), you need a car to get up there. Prices and opening hours here. A small piece of advice; go on a weekday.
Lodi
.Lodi is another town that is very near Milan, it takes about 35 minutes with the train going to Bologna, and you can catch it from both Stazione Centrale and Cadorna. Lodi is a lovely little town whose interesting archtecture dates all the way back to 1160.

Vigevano
And please don’t miss Vigevano in the province of Pavia. It takes about an hour to get there and we recommend taking the train from Porta Genova railway station (find on map)
Vigevano is an incredibly beautiful art town with an amazing renaissance square Piazza Ducale, considered one of Italy’s finest. There is also a castle, Vigevano’s own Castello Sforzesco which was transformed from a fortress to the residence of a prince in 1492-94 by Ludovio Sforza. Furthermore Vigevano is famous for making shoes and there is a shoe museum inside the Castello Sforzesco with no admission.
There’s an antique market in Vigevanoon the thrid Sunday of every month (except August) in the area between Piazza Piazza Martiri della Liberazione, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via S. Croce (find on map).

Wine and Food
If you love wine and great food there are some areas we recommend you visit and you could spend the night in one of the many agrotourisms. Some great areas are Franciacorta, Asti and Langhe (where, among other towns, Alba is located).
There are many food and wine festivals in both Piedmont and Lombardia. These festivals are great for getting an insight into small communities and their seasonal products (wine, truffles, cheeses, chestnuts, mushrooms, pumpkins etc.)
Star-studded restaurants outside Milan
If you came to Milan by car there are lots of great restaurants in Lombardy. We want to mention:
D’O Davide Oldani’s wonderful restaurant with 1 Michelin star, located in San Pietro all’Olmo, Cornaredo (find on map). Davide Oldani is the chef who invented the concept Pop Cuisine (Cucina Pop). Remember to book well in advance.
Cannavacciuolo Bistrot. 1, Piazza Martiri della Libertà in Novara (find on map) which belongs to Antonino Cannavacciulo, one of the new judges in the Italian edition of Masterchef.
Antonino Cannavacciuolo also runs the restaurant (with 2 Michelin stars) and hotel Villa Crespi at the beautiful Lago d’Orta.

Skønne steder du kan besøge tæt på Milano
Milaneserne elsker at tage på dagture udenfor byens “porte”, som de kalder det og der er masser af skønne steder tæt på . Her er Insiderguiden til de bedste steder.
Como
50 km nord for Milano ligger Como ved den smukke Como sø omgivet af bjerge. Det tager ca. 1 time fra Cadorna station til Como sø og en returbillet koster lidt mindre end 10€. Det er en lille hyggelig og meget smuk by med antikke bymure med et skønt shoppingområde i det historiske centrum og det er rent faktisk også det sted hvor vores personlige kærlighedsaffære med Italien begyndte for mange år siden.
Como er berømt for sin silke og vi synes du skal besøge outlettet Diffusione Seta som ligger på Piazza Cavour 8-11 (find på kort).
Da vi var der sidst spiste vi på den superhyggelige

En anden hyggelig ting er at tage færgen fra Como (lige ved Piazza Cavour) og tage til fx Bellaggio, eller tage ud og se de fantastisk smukke villaer, der ligger i området.
Man kan tage fra Como med kabelbane op til Brunate, hvor der i klart vejr er en fantastisk udsigt over Como søen og Alperne.
Gennem hele sommeren er det skønne friluftsbad Villa Olmo, 20 minutters gang fra stationen, åbent hver dag fra 9 -19.30, billeterne koster 8.50€ for hele dagen og 5.50€ for eftermiddagen for voksne og 4.50€ (hele dagen) 3.50€ (eftermiddag) for børn. Bergamo
Så er der Bergamo, der ligger ca, 1 time med tog fra Milano. Man kan rejse fra henholdsvis Stazione Centrale og Garibaldi
Bergamo er en af de få byer i Italien, hvis historiske centrum stadig ligger indenfor de oprindelige bymure, som har bevaret deres oprindelige udseende.
Bergamo er delt i 2 dele Bergamo Bassa (lave Bergamo) og Berrgamo Alta (høje Bergamo). Bergamo Alta er den historiske del af byen som I kan komme til med enten kabelbane eller tage den 45-minutter lange gåtur op.
Der er klostre, historiske bygninger og en meget gammel botanisk have
I Bergamo Bassa ligger det smukke museum Accademia Carrara.
Der er antikvitetsmarked i Begamo Alta den tredje søndag i hver måned (undtagen august) på Piazza Vecchia (find på kort)

Villagio Operaio Crespi d’Adda
En landsby bygget af Crespi familien til arbejderne på deres fabrik. Den var meget avanceret for tiden (slutningen af 1800-tallet) med gratis skole til de ansattes børn,en gratis indendørs svømmehal og den første landsby i Italien med moderne offentlig belysning. I 1995 kom landsbyen på UNESCO World Heritage List. Se hvordan du kommer dertil her.
San Pellegrino Spa
Hvis du har lyst til virkelig at forkæle dig selv, så tag en dag op til San Pellegrino spa (terme) (find på kort), det kræver, at du har bil eller lejer en. Priser og åbningstider her. Et lille råd; tag derop på en hverdag.
Isole Borromee og Stresa
Isole Borromee (de borromæiske øer) ligger i Maggiore søen og du kan sejle til dem fra Stresa, de er skønne året rundt men specielt flotte i foråret. De er berømte for deres paldser og smukke haver. Der er tre øer: Isola Bella med det Borromæiske Palads og haver, Isola Superiore (Fiskerøen) en lillebitte ø med en karakteristisk fiskerlandsby og Isola Madre med en botansik have og et palads – bemærk at du skal betale en billet for at komme ind og se seværdighederne(10-14€ pr. person).
Stresa er ret tæt på Milano og du kan komme dertil med toget fra både Stazione Centrale og Stazione Garibaldi, turen tager ca. halvanden time.

Lodi
Lodi er en anden by meget tæt på Milano, det tager ca. 35 minutter med toget mod Bologna, som du kan tage både fra Stazione Centrale og Cadorna. Lodi er en smuk lille by med en interessant arkitektur, der går helt tilbage til 1160.

Vigevano
Gå endelig ikke glip af Vigevano i provinsen af Pavia. Det tager ca. 1 time at komme dertil og det bedste er at tage toget fra Porta Genova stationen (find på kort)
Vigevano er en utrolig smuk kunstby med en fantastisk renæssanceplads Piazza Ducale, som regnes for en af Italiens fineste. Der er også et slot, Vigevanos egne Castello Sforzesco, som blev transformerede fra et fort til en fyrstelig residens i 1492-94 af Ludovio Sforza. Desuden er Vigevano berømt for sin sko produktion og der ligger et skomuseum inde i Castello Sforzesco og der er fri adgang.

Vin og mad
Er du interesseret i vin og god mad er der nogle områder vi synes du skal besøge og måske overnatte på nogle af de mange agroturismer. Nogle skønne områder er Franciacorta, Asti og Langhe (Hvor blandt andet Alba ligger)
Der er masserafvin- og madfestivaller i både Piemonte og Lombardiet. Disse festivaller giver en fatastisk indsigt i de små samfund og deres forskellige produkter alt efter årstiden (vin, trøfler, oste, kastagner, svampe, græskar osv)
Stjernebesatte restauranter udenfor Milano
Er du hernede i bil er der rigtig mange fantastiske restauranter i Lombardiet. Her vil specielt nævne:
D’O Davide Oldanis skønne restaurant med 1 Michelin stjerne, der ligger i San Pietro all’Olmo, Cornaredo (find på kort). Davide Oldani er kokken der har opfundet Pop Cuisine (Cucina Pop) konceptet. Husk at booke i god tid!
